I was a technician at the FSS-7 Radar tower from Dec 1969 until April 1979 when I was reassigned to the Pave Paws system at Cape Cod AFS. This was the replacement system for the aging FSS-7 'temporary' radar system. There were originally 7 sites Mt Hebo, OR, Mill Valley, CA (north of the Golden Gate Bridge), Mt Laguna CA, Laredo, TX, Tampa Bay FL, Ft Fisher NC and the last site just west of Bangor ME (I've forgotten the name of the site). Each had a 750 mile range coverage which overlapped for Sea Launched Ballistic Missile Detection and Warning.
There were too many stories to start telling here but I do remember the 'Kitchen Creek' fire (mentioned above) and spent a few days in the forrest carrying a water tank backpack putting out hot spots.
I remember Col Fred Faupel, former pilot who was known to prefer wearing his flight suit to his office job. Tough guy but he got us a new all ranks club built, the 'Mountain Oasis' and 'required everyone to join and pay dues to support the single guys stuck on the mountain.
I remember when two meteorologists from NOAA wanted to get access to the topside area and were reported to be 'Weathermen' (remember the radical faction of the SDS in the 70's?) You can probably guess what happened next. Then another time 2 hunters with backpacks and rifles were reported by radio but the transmission was received as 2 hundred with backpacks and rifles. More fun.....
The pics above did not show the radome which was removed after the antenna was removed. The original dome was rubber and was held up like a balloon with a number of high volume blowers. It was replaced later with an aluminum and fibergalss paneled rigid dome. No one ever went out on the 'catwalk' unless we were down for maintenance. The power output from the transmitters would have been very harmfull to your health for even a short exposure.
One more story. George Jirout (mentioned above) and I were told to paint the inside of the airlock which was used when the dome was rubber and pressurized with the blowers. It was the midnight shift and we finished just about sunrise. The shift chief noticed we'd had way too much paint fumes and told us to go get some fresh air. Well, we'd noticed there were birds lined up on the perimeter fence chasing bugs in the morning air so we went and found some moths inside the tower and threw them up outside so the birds would feed on them. Sounds like fun until the base commander drove by and saw us. You can fill in the rest.
I retired in Aug 88 from the Air Force and again in Sept 2011 from a second career and now live south of Houston TX. I'd welcome hearing from anyone I was stationed with during those years.

Two biggest pits I've ever seen on the lawn for this show. Then security got in the middle of at least the one I was near and got into a formation like soldiers and performed a dance routine. It lightened the mood and they got the job done. It was the first show I ever saw too.

As a civilian assigned to the Ground Electronics Engineering and Installation Agency (GEEIA), at Norton Air Force Base, I installed the small Identification Friend of Foe radar antenna and radome on top of the rubber radome of the search radar. That was sometime during the winter of 1963/64, I believe. That rubber radome is real bouncy when you're standing on top.
I got snowed in one day and had to drive home via San Diego to Highland, California as I commuted to the site daily for about two weeks. The site offered a beautiful view of the Anza-Borrego Desert about 5000 feet below.

this is such a sad and gruesome case, and such a waste of a young man's life. Methamphetamine psychosis is very real and one reason this drug is so dangerous. The condition mimics schizophrenia and puts anyone in the vicinity in direct danger.

Emergency wards now have to incorporate padded cells for such cases, where these people would injure doctors and nurses trying to help them. I heard one ER doctor in an interview remark about how easy it was when Heroin was the most common street drug because the users were at least peaceful.

What I don't understand is why this person was jailed and not institutionalized. However awful the act, if he was mentally ill and at the time suffering a drug-induced psychosis surely jail is an inappropriate action?
